Three Things to Consider Before Choosing a Wellness School
As you begin your quest in becoming a massage therapist or personal fitness trainer, you’ve probably already realized a large component of your career is about relationships. In order to start and build a strong business after you receive your certification, you need to begin with a strong support system. This support system begins at school. Below are three qualities that a wellness school must have to help you ensure that you’re receiving the best education and have the most potential for career success.
Accreditation. A sign of a solid massage or personal training program is a school with accreditation. Accredited schools are held to strict guidelines and standards by outside governing bodies to ensure that you receive a quality education and that the school isn’t just out to make a buck.
A Hands-on Approach. Another sign of a good school is a hands-on approach to teaching. In the fields of massage therapy and personal fitness training, a large portion of the work incorporates the human element. In-person Campus programs incorporate the human element through a hands-on approach to teaching and instructing students. The foundation of your education in a campus program will be defined by the instructors and the education that they can provide you. When you receive a certificate from a primarily online program, you may likely miss a large piece of the human element, in turn causing your career to suffer.
A Comfortable and Supportive Learning Environment. Your instructors and fellow students have a large impact on this as these people can serve as a powerful motivational and inspiration influence on you as you begin your exciting new career. You especially need this support when the going gets tough. There's a reason why more than 90 percent of hands-on students finish the program compared with a completion rate of below 50 percent for most on-line certifications. Students need support. When you’re shopping around for the school to help you start your career, keep this in mind. Do you feel comfortable with the staff, instructors and other students who you meet during your introduction? Make sure that you do because you’re investing a lot of time, energy and money into this new venture and you want it to be successful.
There are many factors in determining your success as massage therapist or a personal fitness trainer. You should remember that the relationships that you form during your education now will help you later. Relationships with instructors who are in the field and students will help you build your network as you establish your new career. This network of colleagues and instructors is a jump-start to a robust social and support network that will feed your practice for years to come.
