Massage Therapy and Personal Training Careers Project Growth

Despite the economic downturn, careers in massage therapy and personal training are still growing.

LAWRENCE, KS and KANSAS CITY, MO (April 10, 2009) – The Midwest has been hit hard by the recession with lay-offs at most major companies. In fact, most people these days know someone who has been affected in one way or another. But, not all jobs have been impacted by the hard times. New reports show that careers in massage therapy and personal training are on the rise and quite profitable.

According to new statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for personal trainers and group fitness instructors are expected to increase 27 percent between 2006 and 2016. This is a much faster rate than the average for all occupations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the increase is due to Americans understanding that a sensible diet and regular workouts are crucial to a healthier lifestyle, and that getting healthy is easier with the help of a fitness professional. The growth is expected to come in the form of job opportunities in health clubs and other fitness facilities include part-time jobs teaching yoga, Pilates and other popular group exercise classes; and full-time positions, such as in personal training; and managerial positions.

Massage therapy is on the up as well, the group says. In fact, massage therapy is a perfect career for people who are seeking flexible, part-time work with a full-time salary. As more people learn about the benefits of regular massage, employment opportunities in this field are on the rise with 20 percent growth anticipated between now and 2016. The average certified massage therapist makes $19.39 an hour.

To become a personal trainer or massage therapist, most states and employers require proper certification and/or licensing. MTTI-WellSpring offers educational programs in both disciplines. For more details, go to www.mtti.net.
