MTTI-Wellspring Teams Up With Harvesters
Students, Faculty and Staff can donate food Nov. 10 through Nov. 20.
KANSAS CITY, MO – MTTI-Wellspring is teaming up with Harvesters, Kansas City’s only food bank, to sponsor a food drive Monday, Nov. 10 through Thursday, Nov. 20. Donations received through the drive will help Harvesters’ network feed those in need throughout Kansas City.
The drive also supports MTTI-Wellspring’s mission to give back to the community.
“Proper nutrition is essential for health and wellness,” says Don Farquharson, executive director of MTTI-Wellspring. “We’re excited to collect food for Harvesters and give back to the Kansas City community.”
With the obesity epidemic an important national health issue, many forget that hunger is a problem in the Kansas City area. Hunger can be a child who stuffs his pockets during lunch at school so he has food to eat at home in the evening or a parent who is—ironically—overweight because sugar and carbohydrate-laden foods are often the least expensive at the local store. It may also be a senior citizen who goes without food in order to buy medicine.
“The reality is that there are hungry people in Kansas City,” says Brooke Schmidt, massage therapy student at MTTI-Wellspring and student organizer of the food drive. “Harvesters’ agencies provide assistance to nearly 60,000 people every week. We just want to help those in need, especially over the holidays.”
To make a donation, look for the big Harvesters’ boxes located in the student lounge Monday, Nov. 10 through Thursday, Nov. 20. The most needed food items are canned vegetables and fruit, boxed meals, canned meats/tuna, peanut butter, jelly, canned soup, hot and cold cereal, soap, deodorant, shampoo and toilet paper. Please do not donate glass, homemade or perishable items. During the day and evening of Wednesday, Nov. 19 and Thursday, Nov. 20, refreshments will be provided for the generosity of those who donated.
Harvesters distributes an average of 24 million pounds of food to a network of more than 550 charitable agencies in Greater Kansas City, including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, day care centers and senior centers.
